One of the eeriest moments of my life was wandering through the abandoned whaling station in Grytviken, South Georgia Island. It was a cold, rainy day and and an antarctic fog had descended over the island. In the photo, you can see the whaling vessel, Petrel; her whale gun clearly visible in the foreground. It’s a very, very strange place. It was as if the spirits of thousands of whales haunted this remote outpost. I was not unhappy to leave and continue my voyage South to Antarctica.
