Dr. Katalin Karikó is a biochemist whose groundbreaking research in mRNA technology not only revolutionized vaccine development but also reshaped the future of medicine itself. Her work, once dismissed and met with skepticism, ultimately paved the way for life-saving mRNA vaccines, earning her a Nobel Prize. Yet, beyond the accolades, her story is one of extraordinary perseverance, of a scientist who refused to abandon an idea, even in the face of rejection and career setbacks.
I photographed Karikó on September 16, 2024, at the waterfront home of her daughter, Olympic gold medalist Susan Francia, in sunny La Jolla, California. From the moment we met, her humor and self-awareness were apparent, an amused glint in her eyes, a dry wit that made even complex scientific discussions feel effortless. On the kitchen table, in an almost casual display, sat her Nobel Prize alongside her daughter’s gold medals, nestled together in a simple tray. It was a quiet but powerful testament to a life defined by determination and achievement.
Over the course of our conversation, she recounted the years of struggle at the University of Pennsylvania, decades of funding rejections, professional roadblocks, and a prevailing doubt about the potential of mRNA. But Karikó’s belief never wavered. She spoke of long nights in the lab, the frustration of failed experiments, the relentless push to make others see what she already knew: that mRNA could transform medicine. And then, after years of perseverance, the validation came, first in the form of scientific breakthroughs, then in global recognition as mRNA technology played a central role in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite her profound contributions to science, Karikó remains strikingly grounded. She exudes warmth, wit, and an unshakable passion for discovery. She is as quick to laugh as she is to explain complex biochemical pathways, a reminder that the greatest minds are often those who approach their work with both intensity and joy.
Her legacy extends beyond mRNA vaccines. It is a testament to the power of persistence, the necessity of questioning established norms, and the courage to push forward despite resistance. In her journey, Karikó embodies the essence of scientific discovery: the idea that transformative breakthroughs often come not from immediate success but from the sheer refusal to give up.
