Steven Quake

Dr. Steve Quake is a physicist-turned-bioengineer whose work has not only bridged disciplines but has fundamentally reshaped the way we study life itself. A pioneer in microfluidics, single-cell analysis, and precision medicine, his career has been a testament to the power of applying physical principles to biological complexity. As a professor at Stanford and a leader at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), he stands at the vanguard of biotechnology, one of the rare scientists elected to all three National Academies, Science, Engineering, and Medicine.

I visited Quake on December 4, 2024, photographing him at his new home in Palo Alto and later at his lab at Stanford. To spend time with him is to be immersed in the intersection of physics and biology, where the microscopic world becomes both a puzzle and a playground. He spoke with characteristic precision and clarity, articulating how physical laws, so long the domain of engineers and physicists, are now being used to decode the complexities of genomics, disease, and human health.

Quake’s contributions have already revolutionized medical diagnostics. His development of non-invasive prenatal testing has changed how we approach fetal health, sparing countless families from invasive procedures. His work in microfluidics has miniaturized entire laboratories, allowing researchers to study cells at an unprecedented level of detail. These advances are not abstract, they are reshaping medicine in real time, pushing the boundaries of what was once thought possible.

Beyond his technical brilliance, Quake is a pragmatist. His leadership at CZI is driven by the belief that science must move beyond the theoretical and into the practical, that discoveries should not remain locked in academic journals but should be translated into tools that can benefit human health at scale. In him, the visionary and the engineer exist in balance; he is not content merely to ask big questions but to find ways to answer them with rigor and impact.
